Build Smart Institute is celebrating another successful summer of the Future Builders Academy, which provided three weeks of immersive, hands-on construction programming for students ages 14–19.
Thanks to the generous support of Virginia Housing, Ferrum College, and Procon Inc., and collaboration with the Franklin County Department of Economic Development, New River Valley Home Builders Association, and Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley, students were able to participate in the program completely free of charge.
Designed for high school-aged students interested in exploring careers in construction, the Future Builders Academy combines hands-on learning with real-world experiences and opportunities to connect with industry professionals. Students explored concrete and carpentry while developing practical skills and learning about the many education and career pathways available within the construction industry.
Participants received a customized learning experience led by industry professionals, including Build Smart Institute instructors. Throughout the program, students:
- Received lunch each day
- Received transportation from The Franklin Center to Ferrum College
- Toured Ferrum College’s campus
- Explored educational and career opportunities available after high school
- Toured commercial and residential construction sites in Montgomery County
- Put their new skills into practice by constructing permanent structures
The Future Builders Academy gives students in Virginia an opportunity to experience the construction industry firsthand, develop practical skills, and discover rewarding career paths they may not have previously considered.
Through experiences like the Future Builders Academy, Build Smart Institute is helping students connect education with opportunity while introducing the next generation to the skills, careers, and possibilities available in the construction industry.
