Build Smart Institute is excited to expand its summer programming in 2026 with two immersive, hands-on construction camps for students ages 14–19.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Virginia Housing, Ferrum College, and Procon Inc., in collaboration with the Franklin County Department of Economic Development, students may attend this program completely free of charge.
Designed for high school-aged students interested in exploring careers in the construction industry, these camps provide real-world experience, hands-on learning, and opportunities to connect with industry professionals.
Week One: Concrete Camp
July 6–10, 2026 | Ferrum College | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
During the first week, students will explore the world of concrete construction. Participants will learn essential job-site safety practices, gain hands-on experience pouring and finishing concrete, and hear directly from professionals about career opportunities within the industry.
Week Two: Carpentry Camp
July 13-17, 2026 | Ferrum College | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The second week focuses on carpentry and woodworking skills. Students will work together to build a permanent structure while learning foundational carpentry techniques and exploring careers in the carpentry trade.
Each week is designed as a standalone camp, allowing students to enroll in one or BOTH weeks depending on their interests.
What Students Can Expect
Participants will benefit from a customized learning experience led by industry experts, including Build Smart Institute instructors. In addition to hands-on training, students will:
* Receive lunch each day
* Have transportation provided from The Franklin Center to Ferrum College
* Tour Ferrum College’s campus
* Learn more about educational and career opportunities available after high school
The camp is designed for students across Southwest Virginia who are interested in learning more about concrete, carpentry, and the many rewarding careers available in the construction industry.
