About Build Smart Institute™

The owners of F&S Building Innovations opened Build Smart Institute in 2020. They saw a growing need for skills training to support the region's workforce. By offering a new training institute, the goal was to introduce more people to careers in the trades.

Focused on construction and construction management fields, training is accessible for all learners. For those new to construction trades, Build Smart provides foundational skills training. More experienced trainees receive professional development to advance and grow their skills.

Build Smart recognizes the importance of providing accessible training. Through partnerships with community organizations, training is available to youth and adults. Partners include Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, and the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board.

In 2022, Build Smart began working with Ferrum College on a new partnership. The focus was to create training in technical trades and construction management. Launching in fall 2024, the program will include customized e-learning and hands-on training. Pathways include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and more. The mission of Build Smart Institute is to educate and train individuals to become career-ready and advance within construction industry occupations. With a combination of virtual learning, classroom instruction, and hands-on laboratory skill practice, Build Smart Institute will train you, test you, and give you the tools to be successful.
