"Becoming a nonprofit isn't simply a change in our organizational status. It's an opportunity to bring more people and partners into the work of building the skilled workforce our communities need," states Michelle Ramaker, president of Build Smart Institute. "There are people who are ready to work and employers who need skilled workers. At Build Smart, it is our goal to help close that gap by making high-quality training more accessible."
Build Smart provides hands-on training designed to help individuals become career-ready and help current construction professionals advance their skills. Programs include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, and construction fundamentals, along with safety certifications and professional development courses in areas such as blueprint reading, estimating, and project supervision.
Build Smart's approach is designed to create multiple pathways to career success. Through its partnership with Ferrum College, eligible skilled-trades training can also connect students with opportunities to earn college credit, allowing individuals to build practical, job-ready skills while continuing their education.
The need and demand for accessible training is already evident. This year, Build Smart has seen more than 240 training enrollments, with students earning more than 270 credentials and certificates. To date in 2026, 94% of Build Smart students received tuition assistance.
For students, those numbers can represent a first step into a new career, an opportunity for advancement, or a credential that increases their value in the workplace. For employers, they represent a growing pool of workers with the skills and safety training needed to contribute on the job.
Build Smart’s new 501(c)(3) nonprofit status creates opportunities to build on the impact the organization has made since its founding in 2020. Through individual giving, corporate and community partnerships, grants, and other charitable support, Build Smart can expand scholarships and training opportunities, making skilled-trades education more accessible while strengthening its commitment to workforce development.
Support for the
