Training Opportunities for Youth with Disabilities

Pre-ETS Training at Build Smart Institute

Build Smart Institute is approved by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to provide Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) for youth with disabilities. These services give students the opportunity to explore careers, prepare for adult life, and build essential workplace and life skills starting as young as age 14.

Our Pre-ETS program combines hands-on training with career exploration so students can discover their interests while gaining real skills they can use at home, at school, and on the job. We work directly with youth and their families to provide support and create a pathway toward independence and success.

What Students Learn in Pre-ETS

Through Build Smart Institute’s Pre-ETS programming, students receive instruction and certifications in areas that prepare them for both life and work:

Industry-Recognized Training: OSHA 10 certification, CPR/First Aid certification, and CORE Fundamentals of Construction NCCER modules.
Career Exploration: Exposure to construction careers and related skilled trades, with guidance on pathways that match individual interests and abilities.
Workplace Readiness Skills: Teamwork, safety awareness, communication, and problem-solving skills needed for long-term success.
Home Maintenance Skills: Training in basic safety, hand tool use, home electrical basics, plumbing maintenance, HVAC and ventilation, and more.
Achievement Recognition: Students earn certificates that demonstrate their accomplishments and skills to future employers and educators.
