Employees During Annual Conference 

The Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBVA) held its annual conference in Williamsburg in June. During the conference, HBVA held its 5th Annual Housing Excellence Awards. The awards honor members' leadership, engagement, and dedication to the association, community, and building industry. During the event, four Build Smart employees received recognition.

Curtis West and Charlie Smith received recognition as Teacher of the Year nominees. 

  • Curtis creates a culture of learning that sparks his students' interest in construction. With a mix of classroom and lab work, he provides an interesting and hands-on approach to learning. Curtis creates a positive learning environment that supports students’ success. Curtis’ strengths include thorough preparation, supportive classroom management, and creativity in instruction.
  • Charlie excels at providing professional development for students. Especially, those looking to grow their estimating, project management, and other skills. His leadership, immense knowledge, and teaching background benefit students in his class.

Curtis and Charlie bring over 70 years of experience in construction to the classroom.

Leadership Awards

Build Smart's President and Vice President received leadership awards during the awards celebration. 

  • Alicia Smith, Build Smart President, received the Woman of the Year Award. This award recognizes exemplary leadership in and dedication to the housing industry. Alicia has a strong record of promoting diversity and inclusion. She strives to encourage, lead, and create opportunities for women in the Virginia Building Industry.  

  • Michelle Ramaker, Build Smart Vice-President, received the Young Professional of the Year Award. The award recognizes her outstanding leadership and dedication to the Virginia Housing Industry. Under Michelle's leadership, Build Smart has seen growth in preparing the future workforce for the construction industry.
