Michelle Ramaker, Vice President of Build Smart Institute was sworn in as a member of the Virginia Apprenticeship Council on August 26th. During her three year term on the Council, Michelle will provide valuable input on setting standards for apprentice agreements in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Registered apprenticeships are an important resource to prepare individuals for careers in the skilled trades. Michelle’s participation on the Council highlights Build Smart’s focus on prioritizing this tool for future trainees. According to the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement, 90% of apprentices who complete an apprenticeship retain employment, with an average annual salary of $80,000.

“Build Smart is leading the way in preparing individuals for entry to the skilled trades," stated Michelle Ramaker. "I am proud to represent the industry as a council member and ensure future trainees’ success in registered apprenticeships in Virginia.”

Members of the Apprenticeship Council are appointed by the Governor of Virginia and are responsible for setting standards for apprentice agreements in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Individuals may enroll at Build Smart to receive the required classroom instruction for an apprenticeship in the trades including carpentry, electrical, and plumbing; while completing on-the-job hours with an employer.
